Overview

The G3 battle rifle was developed in the 1950’s by the German armament manufacturer Heckler & Koch (H&K) in collaboration with Spanish agency CETME.

In 1959 the then newly formed Bundeswehr (West German army) adopted the G3 chambered in 7.62 x 51mm NATO. Building on this, H&K were very successful in the export market, the G3 being adopted by the armed forces of over 40 countries. It was and in some cases continues to be made under license in 13 countries.

The G3 has seen the widest use in armies and peacekeeping forces throughout Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Latin America.
