This item is HIRE ONLY for use by a recognised Film, TV, Commercials or Theatre production company.

The Mossberg Model 500 is a range of shotguns manufactured by O.F. Mossberg & Sons. They are pump action shotguns which share the same receiver and action but vary in calibre, barrel length, magazine capacity and furniture materials.

Originally developed for hunting and self-defense, they are now also used extensively by law enforcement and military organizations worldwide. The US military are still acquiring pump shotguns, the Navy acquired several thousand Mossberg 590A1 shotguns in 2004 and the US Army placed an order in 2009 for 14,818 units.

Introduced in 1961, all model 500s are based on the same basic design. Originally using a single action bar this was changed to dual action bars in 1970. Intended for use in harsh and dirty conditions the Model 500 series is designed to be easy to clean and maintain.

Mossberg sells a wide variety of accessory stocks and barrels, allowing many configurations to be made. With the appropriate parts, the same Model 500 can be a field hunting weapon, a defensive weapon for civilian, police, or military use, a clay shooting gun, or .50 caliber (12.7mm) rifled muzzle-loader

Helpful Info…

Regarding dates and period correctness, this item is appropriate for the US military, US police SWAT teams, as well as security services and ‘criminal’ use.

Foxtrot has several versions of the Model 500 pump action, example shown is in a ‘riot gun’ configuration. It has a 20″ barrel, 5 shot magazine, polymer furniture and is in a blued finish.

Film Set Notes…

The pump-action shotgun is another action sequence staple, they’re reliable, actor friendly and the shorter barreled versions, useable in confined spaces and give good flash.

We normally use  shotgun 12g blanks loaded with black powder that gives a slower burn than smokeless loads, resulting in a bright muzzle flash, accompanied by an amount of smoke, a dramatic effect.

A pump action shotgun also has the bonus of having one of he most distinctive ‘loading‘ sounds  as the action is racked open and then shut deftly – it is good ‘punctuation’ in a drama soundscape.
