Overview

The Remington Model 870 is a pump action shotgun manufactured by the Remington Arms Company. It is widely used for sport shooting, hunting and self-defense. It is also commonly used by law enforcement and military organizations worldwide.

The Remington 870 was the fourth major design in a series of Remington pump shotguns and in 1950, they introduced a modern, reliable, and relatively inexpensive shotgun – the 870. It was an adaptation of the John Browning-designed Remington 11.

Sales of the 870 have been steady. On April 13, 2009 the ten millionth Model 870 was produced, and the 870 holds the record for best-selling shotgun ever.

Numerous versions were available, a ‘Police model’ was introduced with extended magazine capacity and folding stock which became a standard Police armed response team weapon and was widely successful in numerous countries.

Helpful Info

Foxtrot has several versions of the Model 870 in either blued or nickel finish. The example  shown is fitted with pistol grips, a 5-shot magazine and is in nickel finish.

Film Set Notes

The pump-action shotgun is another action sequence staple, they’re reliable, actor friendly and the shorter barreled versions, useable in confined spaces and give good flash.

We normally use  12g shotgun blanks loaded with black powder that gives a slower burn than smokeless loads, resulting in a bright muzzle flash, accompanied by an amount of smoke, a dramatic effect.

A pump action shotgun also has the bonus of having one of he most distinctive ‘loading‘ sounds  as the action is racked open and then shut deftly – it is good ‘punctuation’ in a drama soundscape.
